The 30 Under 30 Program – 2018 Debrief
By Kaitlin Cantell with input from Ben Provolt, Matt Deane, and Brittiney Diggs
Elliott Masie and the Learning CONSORTIUM have invested in an amazing program for 30 Learning Professionals under the age of 30 for many years at the Learning Conference. This year, we had the opportunity to lead the program collaboratively as four previous alumni of the program. We were tasked with creating an immersive leadership experience for the cohort. We personally feel extremely fortunate to have worked with this group as they are 30 of the most amazing professionals in our industry. It is evident that the rigorous application and selection process creates highly talented cohorts every year.
To kick off this year’s experience, we planned an all-day leadership program developed around role-based competencies important in the learning profession. We were able to gain input and feedback on the programming by several experts on Elliott’s team and worked together to come up with an excellent agenda. We were also able to help shape different activities throughout the conference, including Breakfasts with Leaders (e.g. D&I Expert Jayzen Patria and User Experience Expert Andrea Wong of Google), Reverse Mentoring, and “Club Learn”.
Our schedule consisted of conversations about curiosity, innovation, and focus. We were able to hear from Elliott Masie, Bob Mosher (MASIE Learning Advocate), Bruce Wilkinson (Allan Myers), and Richard Culatta (MASIE Innovations Fellow and CEO of ISTE) on these topics. The cohort was able to ask thought-provoking questions that enabled paradigm shifts in their views of learning and thoughts about their career paths and industries. Breon Klopp, who led the PIT Crew Learning Experience at Learning 2018, took our group through an experiential learning exercise that was inspiring and collaborative.
The group then got to work through projects with a team of peers and were led by subject matter experts to define real-world solutions. They had the entire conference to collaborate on the outcomes and presented their findings at the end of Learning 2018.
We were also able to host a Chief Learning Officer Panel during our Leadership Development day. This consisted of three amazing Learning Leaders, including Martha Soehren (Comcast), Rob Lauber (McDonald’s), and Tara Deakin (TD Bank and ATD). They provided inspiring wisdom and excitement!
The final portion of the day was centered around Individual Development Plans. Each member of the cohort had development conversations with their leaders prior to attending Learning 2018. They were tasked with sharing their plans with each other and offering feedback. Many had the opportunity to facilitate sessions at the conference and incorporated that into their development planning.
Leading the program for 30 Under 30 was rewarding and valuable. The alumni network is strong. We are glad to bring the next set of 30 Under 30 participants into this group and pass the baton to our next generation of leaders!
